 Artist Clara Aden shared a summary of her road trip on the MMMocA bus!
“The idea behind the Molue Mobile Museum of Contemporary Art (MMMoCA)’s road trip from Lagos to Dakar, Senegal, for the Dak’Art 2016 biennale was to provide participating artists from Nigeria and other West African countries an interactive platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and to dialogue with the public en route Dakar. At first, the thought of travelling to Dakar from Lagos, a distance of about 4000 km (one way) with MMMoCA (a vintage Mercedes-Benz 911 engine truck converted into a mobile museum) seemed a bit crazy. As the plan for the adventure became more concrete, anxiety turned to excitement. I asked our driver Mr. Oyibo and our ‘in house mechanic’ Mr. Sunday John if they were sure MMMoCA would get us to Dakar and back. Their confidence on the good technical condition of the bus was unwavering. Mr. Oyibo said, “Oga, we don work this motor finish. Nothing wey dey there, wey me and Small John no fit do. Oga you no dey hear to the sound of the engine? This motor, na German machine. We go go Dakar and come back. No wahala.” And so it came to pass. We went to Dakar and came back. The road trip commenced April 24 through 17 May 2016. We made stopovers at the ‘Opera Village’ in Laongo, near Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, (a project founded by the German filmmaker and artist Christoph Schlingensief) and at the Goethe Institut in Ghana. This is the summary of my road trip to Dakar. Complied by the project co ordinator Emeka Udemba l saw call for artists participation on Goethe institut lagos website and l apply for It on Wednesday 21st April l receive a Call that l am one of the artists going to Dakar art festival l was very excited. Hearing and seeing is so different from each other. I got to see a lot of practical realities of a communities along the way l had a wonderful time and l wish to do the trip all over again and again.”  |
